India’s Spin Struggles Exposed as South Africa Clinch Opening Test

India’s long-held confidence on spin-friendly home pitches was rattled after a surprising defeat to South Africa in the opening Test at Eden Gardens. On a sharply turning and uneven surface where no team managed to cross 200, South African skipper Temba Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 stood out as the highest score of the match. Chasing a modest 124, India were skittled out for just 93, further hampered by captain Shubman Gill’s absence after he retired hurt with a neck injury.

South Africa’s spinners dominated the contest, claiming 12 of India’s 18 wickets, with Simon Harmer delivering a stellar eight-wicket match haul to secure the player-of-the-match award. The collapse highlighted India’s unexpected vulnerability to spin, unsettling home fans accustomed to seeing their batters command such conditions. Head coach Gautam Gambhir defended the pitch, stressing that the issue lay in India’s application rather than the surface itself, urging batters to show greater patience, temperament, and defensive solidity.

With KL Rahul’s 39 being the highest Indian score in the match, the team has now dropped to fourth in the World Test Championship standings. As the focus shifts to the second and final Test in Guwahati on November 22, doubt lingers over Gill’s availability. India may reinstate B Sai Sudharsan in the top order after Washington Sundar filled in at number three in Kolkata.
