Indian Opposition Demands Parliamentary Discussion on U.S. Deportation of Immigrants

Indian opposition lawmakers have raised concerns over the treatment of 104 Indian immigrants recently deported by the United States, calling for a parliamentary discussion on the issue. The deportees, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, were reportedly shackled during the flight and subjected to hours of scrutiny upon arrival at Amritsar airport on Wednesday. Lawmakers from the Congress party, including Gaurav Gogoi and Manickam Tagore, have condemned the deportation, questioning the Modi government’s response to what they described as a violation of human dignity and rights.

The U.S. military plane that carried the deportees was part of President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, marking the first instance of such a deportation involving a military aircraft. While previous administrations have deported Indian nationals, this is the first time a military plane has been used for such long-distance deportations. The incident comes just ahead of Trump’s expected meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington next week, with migration likely to be discussed as part of their talks.

The Indian Foreign Ministry and the U.S. Embassy have not yet commented on the matter, and opposition lawmakers have demanded that Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar provide clarification in Parliament. Both houses were adjourned on Thursday as opposition members raised their voices, demanding answers from the government. The ongoing discussion on migration between the two countries highlights the growing ties between India and the U.S., particularly in the context of their shared concerns over China.
