Indian Distributors File Antitrust Case Against Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto Over Deep Discounts

The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has filed an antitrust complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against major quick-commerce players Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart, and Zepto, alleging predatory pricing and deep discounting practices. The complaint claims these platforms are engaging in unfair pricing models that hurt smaller retailers, making it difficult for traditional stores to compete.

The case follows an earlier CCI probe into food delivery services, which found competition law breaches by Zomato and Swiggy. With India’s quick commerce sector expected to grow to $35 billion by 2030, small retailers are increasingly concerned about losing customers to these fast-delivery platforms. A survey by Datum Intelligence found that 36% of quick-commerce shoppers had reduced visits to supermarkets, while 46% had cut back purchases from small independent stores. AICPDF’s filing, which compared the pricing of 25 consumer products, highlighted significant price differences between online platforms and traditional retailers, making it difficult for local stores to compete.

The CCI will now review the complaint and decide whether to initiate a formal investigation, a process that could take months. Meanwhile, Zepto is preparing for an IPO, and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance is also expanding into the quick-commerce space alongside Amazon and Flipkart. Blinkit currently leads the Indian quick-commerce market with a 40% share, followed by Zepto at 29% and Swiggy Instamart at 26%.
