India Condemns Security Breach During Foreign Minister’s Visit to London

New Delhi has strongly condemned a security breach that occurred during Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s visit to London, where a protester broke through a police cordon, obstructed the minister’s vehicle, and tore the Indian flag before being swiftly removed by police. The incident took place outside Chatham House, where Jaishankar was delivering a speech, and involved a small group of demonstrators waving Khalistan flags and chanting separatist slogans.
India’s foreign ministry, in a statement, expressed its disapproval of the “misuse of democratic freedoms” by such elements and urged the British government to uphold its “diplomatic obligations.” Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that New Delhi expects the host country to ensure the safety and security of visiting dignitaries. Meanwhile, Britain’s foreign office has yet to issue a response to the incident.
The Khalistan movement, which seeks a separate Sikh homeland, remains a significant security concern for India and has been a source of diplomatic friction with countries like Canada and the UK. Following similar protests in April 2023, India had requested British authorities to tighten security around Khalistan supporters. Jaishankar’s ongoing six-day trip to the UK and Ireland comes amid growing tensions surrounding the issue.
