Indian Airlines Renew China Focus as Air Links Reopen After Six Years

Indian airlines are rapidly rebuilding their presence in China after both countries approved the return of direct flights following a six-year pause. IndiGo kicked off the revival with direct Kolkata–Guangzhou flights in late October, and Air India is now preparing to restart its non-stop Delhi–Shanghai route from February 1, 2026. The carrier also plans to launch Mumbai–Shanghai services later in 2026, pending regulatory nods. Meanwhile, China Eastern has already resumed operations connecting the two nations.

Air India will operate four weekly flights between Delhi and Shanghai using Boeing 787-8 aircraft, offering flat-bed Business Class seats and a large Economy cabin. The move marks Air India’s return to mainland China since early 2020 and follows renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the reinstated services would strengthen ties between two major economic and cultural powers, while opening opportunities across business, trade, education and healthcare.

Before the pandemic, India and China saw over 500 direct flights monthly, and industry experts believe the restored air connectivity will significantly boost trade and travel. Daily non-stop cargo routes are expected to cut transit times by up to 24 hours and reduce freight costs by 15–20%, eliminating detours via regional hubs. With both India and China leading aviation growth in Asia Pacific—and India projected to be the fastest-growing major market from 2026—the renewed air links promise strong commercial gains for both sides.
