India to Launch Year-Long National Migration Survey in July 2026

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will launch a year-long national migration survey starting July 2026, aiming to capture detailed insights into migration trends across India. The survey will measure migration rates, out-migration, short-term movement, reasons for migration, and overall net migration. Except for certain remote Andaman and Nicobar villages, the survey will cover nearly the entire country.

MoSPI said the updated data will play a crucial role in shaping targeted policies for urban planning, housing, transportation, employment, social security, and skill development. By understanding how and why people move, the government hopes to strengthen socio-economic planning and support more inclusive regional development. Public feedback on the concept note has been invited until November 30.

This will be India’s most detailed migration exercise in over a decade. The last comprehensive dedicated migration survey was conducted in 2007–08, with the latest migration estimate—28.9%—coming from the 2020–21 Periodic Labour Force Survey. The new initiative is expected to significantly improve the country’s understanding of internal mobility patterns.
