India Seeks Parliament Nod for ₹414.55 Billion Additional Spending

India’s government on Monday requested parliamentary approval for a net additional expenditure of ₹414.55 billion ($4.62 billion) for the current fiscal year, with major allocations directed toward defence procurements and subsidies for fertiliser and cooking gas. The proposal forms part of the first batch of supplementary demands for grants submitted by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

According to official documents, the Centre has sought permission for gross extra spending of ₹1.32 trillion. This includes ₹41.03 billion earmarked for defence to meet procurement needs and rising capital costs, along with ₹125 billion to compensate state-run oil marketing companies for under-recoveries on cooking gas sales. An additional ₹110 billion has been proposed to support subsidies on both imported and domestically produced phosphatic and potassic fertilisers, while ₹75.25 billion is designated to offset higher costs of imported urea.

The supplementary allocations, coming on top of the year’s budgeted expenditure of ₹50.65 trillion, will be examined by parliamentary committees before being presented for approval in both houses. With the ruling party holding a majority, the passage of the additional spending is widely expected to be a formality.
