India’s November GST Collections Rise Despite Broad Tax Cuts
India collected 1.70 trillion rupees ($18.98 billion) in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue in November, marking a modest 0.7% increase compared to the same month last year. The rise comes even as the government implemented widespread tax reductions on several mass-consumption items.
After accounting for refunds, net GST collections stood at 1.52 trillion rupees, representing a 1.3% year-on-year increase. Officials noted that the tax revisions—applied to hundreds of products including shampoo, footwear, and small cars—came into effect on September 22, making November the first full month to capture their impact on revenues.
India typically releases consumption tax data with a lag, and the November report will serve as a key indicator of how the sweeping tax cuts influence revenue trends in the coming months. The government expects that broader consumption may help offset the reduced rates over time.
