India May Impose Anti-Dumping Duty on Chinese LNG Tank Imports
India is considering imposing anti-dumping duties on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks imported from China after the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) concluded that these products were being sold at unfairly low prices in the domestic market. The investigation, finalized on March 18, found that such pricing practices caused material injury to Indian manufacturers by undercutting local prices and straining profit margins.
The probe was initiated following a complaint by Inox India Ltd, which highlighted the adverse impact of cheap imports on domestic producers. The DGTR observed that imports from China had increased significantly during the investigation period and were often priced below cost, forcing Indian companies to lower their prices, in some cases even selling at a loss. It also rejected claims that quality differences justified the price disparity, noting that imported and locally made LNG tanks are technically comparable.
This development comes amid global energy uncertainties and supply disruptions, prompting India to strengthen its domestic clean fuel ecosystem. LNG fuel tanks play a crucial role in the country’s transition to cleaner transportation, particularly in heavy commercial vehicles. If approved by the finance ministry, the proposed duties could raise import costs while supporting domestic manufacturing and enhancing energy security.
