India Likely to Miss 2030 Green Hydrogen Target Amid Global Demand Uncertainty
India is set to fall short of its 2030 goal of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with officials now expecting capacity to reach only 3 million tonnes by the end of the decade. Delays in global clean fuel mandates and uncertainty in green hydrogen demand have forced developers to push back timelines to prevent oversupply.
Industries were earlier expected to gradually adopt green hydrogen and ammonia through domestic mandates, but high costs led the government to rethink its approach. Despite these hurdles, India remains focused on building infrastructure to become a major exporter, with 70% of projected output targeted for markets such as Europe, Japan, and South Korea.
Alongside scaling hydrogen capacity, the government is also revisiting renewable energy project plans. About 44 GW of awarded projects are under review due to a lack of offtake agreements, and authorities have been asked to shelve those not commercially viable.
