India Faces Backlash Over E20 Fuel Policy
India’s mandatory use of E20 fuel, a petrol blend containing 20% ethanol, has sparked widespread public criticism after Attorney General R. Venkataramani referred to the rollout as an “experiment” during a court hearing. Although the government denied the characterization and the Attorney General later clarified that he was referring to ethanol supply volumes rather than the policy itself, a viral video of the hearing intensified public concerns and political debate.
Motorists across the country have complained of reduced fuel efficiency and increased vehicle wear, with hundreds of posts on social media alleging engine problems linked to E20 fuel. The controversy has also drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue the policy was implemented without adequate consultation or supporting data. Meanwhile, a protest against the E20 mandate is planned in New Delhi, reflecting growing dissatisfaction among consumers.
The government has urged the public not to believe what it called “wild claims” circulating online and defended the policy’s long-term benefits. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri acknowledged that fuel mileage may drop slightly but maintained that ethanol-blended fuel improves acceleration and is even used in racing cars. Officials continue to promote E20 as a cleaner alternative that reduces carbon emissions, lowers crude oil imports, and supports farmers through increased ethanol production.
