India Approves Sumitomo Mitsui’s Plan to Set Up Local Banking Subsidiary
India’s central bank has granted in-principle approval to Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in the country, marking a significant expansion of the lender’s presence in one of Asia’s fastest-growing banking markets. The Reserve Bank of India said the approval allows SMBC to move beyond its current branch-based operations.
SMBC, part of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, already has a growing footprint in India after acquiring a 24% stake in Yes Bank last year. Setting up a local subsidiary will give the Japanese lender greater operational flexibility and regulatory treatment closer to that of domestic banks.
As a separate legal entity, the wholly owned subsidiary will be allowed to open branches without the restrictions faced by foreign bank branches. Its capital will also be ring-fenced from the parent bank, a structure that enhances financial stability while enabling deeper participation in India’s banking sector.
