India Approves Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy for Fatty Liver Disease Treatment
India’s drug regulator has approved Novo Nordisk’s obesity drug Wegovy for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a serious form of fatty liver disease. The approval covers the 2.4 mg semaglutide injection and marks another significant milestone for the blockbuster drug, which is already approved in India for chronic weight management.
MASH develops due to excessive fat buildup in the liver, leading to inflammation and potential liver damage if left untreated. Novo Nordisk noted that fatty liver disease affects nearly two-thirds of India’s population, making it a major public health concern. The company also highlighted that the disease often progresses silently, with many patients showing no symptoms until advanced stages.
The approval strengthens Novo Nordisk’s position in India’s rapidly expanding obesity and metabolic disease market, where it competes with Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and lower-cost generic semaglutide products from Indian pharmaceutical companies such as Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Sun Pharma. According to market research firm Pharmarack, Novo Nordisk sold around 76,000 units of Wegovy in India during the first half of 2026.
