Fasting Activist Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised as Health Worsens
Social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a government hospital in New Delhi on Saturday after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. Delhi Police said the move was made following medical advice and in compliance with a Delhi High Court order directing authorities to closely monitor his condition and intervene if necessary.
Wangchuk began his fast on June 28 in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination paper leaks that affected millions of students. The protest has gained significant attention across the country and on social media, with visuals showing police removing Wangchuk from the protest site while also clearing several supporters from the area.
According to officials, Wangchuk remains conscious and under medical supervision, with his vital signs reported to be stable. CJP leaders criticised the police action and announced plans to continue the agitation, including a march to Parliament on July 20 to press for education reforms and the minister’s resignation. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke also declared that he had begun an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the movement.
