India and Vietnam to Discuss BrahMos Missile Deal During Presidential Visit

Vietnamese President To Lam has arrived in India for a three-day state visit, where he is expected to discuss expanding defense cooperation, including the potential purchase of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. The deal, estimated to be worth approximately 60 billion rupees ($629 million), would include training and logistical support. While official announcements regarding defense ties are anticipated during the May 5–7 visit, sources indicate that a formal signing of the weapons contract is not expected immediately.

The BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, has become a centerpiece of India’s push to become a global defense exporter. Following successful sales to the Philippines and Indonesia, a deal with Vietnam would further cement India’s role as a regional security provider. New Delhi views Hanoi as a strategic partner in maintaining stability within the Indo-Pacific, particularly as both nations navigate the challenges posed by China’s increasing influence in the region.

Beyond defense, the visit underscores a strengthening economic and diplomatic relationship, with bilateral trade exceeding $16 billion in the last fiscal year. India has historically supported Vietnam’s military through training programs and the 2023 gift of the missile corvette INS Kirpan. President To Lam began his visit in Bodh Gaya, highlighting the deep cultural and religious ties between the two nations before heading to New Delhi for high-level government negotiations.
