“Incidents Happen”: Jharkhand Chief Minister After Tribal Girl Found Dead

Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, found himself in hot water once more for his comments regarding the alleged rape and murder of a tribal girl in the state. On Friday, a 14-year-old pregnant girl was discovered hanging from a tree in a village near Dumka, Jharkhand. Police reported that they have apprehended the suspect in connection with the girl’s alleged rape and subsequent murder. Hemant Soren said when questioned about the situation: “Accidents continue to occur. Where don’t they happen?” provoking harsh opposition criticism.

In addition, Mr. Soren is receiving criticism after a 16-year-old was allegedly lit on fire in the neighbourhood on August 23 by her purported stalker for allegedly declining his proposal. A few days later, the girl passed away in the hospital while receiving therapy. So far, two persons have been taken into custody in this matter. In Ranchi on the same day, a 26-year-old male is accused of breaking into a 15-year-old tribal girl’s home and raping her there.

The BJP asserts that since Mr. Soren was appointed chief minister, “thousands” of crimes against women have occurred in the state. Priyank Kanoongo, the head of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), said on Sunday that the cases were “alarming” and that his team will travel to the state to assess the situation.
