IGL Targets 3,000 PNG Connections A Day Amid Push To Phase Out LPG

Indraprastha Gas Limited (Indraprastha Gas Limited) is accelerating its push for piped natural gas (PNG) adoption, targeting 3,000 new household connections per day within 90 days and a total of 4.85 lakh new connections across its network. Managing Director Kamal Kishore Chatiwal said demand has surged sharply, with daily PNG requests rising from about 600–700 to over 2,100–2,200, driven in part by consumers shifting away from LPG amid global energy disruptions.

The company, which operates over 1,000 CNG stations across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan, is also expanding its strategy to make select urban pockets completely LPG-free by achieving 100% PNG penetration. High-density commercial hubs like Connaught Place are seeing rapid adoption, with thousands of existing connections and dozens of food outlets, including major chains, already moving to PNG as approvals are fast-tracked in coordination with local bodies.

The expansion comes alongside a government directive under the Petroleum and Natural Gas framework mandating households in PNG-enabled areas to transition away from LPG within 90 days. Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas), including Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, have emphasized that shifting to PNG is crucial given India’s higher import dependence on LPG compared to natural gas, much of which moves through vulnerable global shipping routes.
