‘If you send me messages like this…’ writes Pasoori singer Shae Gill, who was trolled for condoling Sidhu Moose Wala’s death

Shae Gill, best known for the hit song Pasoori, responded to the backlash she received after condoling Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s death. Moose Wala was killed by armed assailants in Punjab on Tuesday, allegedly as part of a gang war, and was cremated in his ancestral village.

Shae, like a slew of other celebrities in the entertainment industry, took to Instagram Stories to express her condolences. “Heartbroken. “May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and friends find the strength to bear this loss,” wrote the Pakistani singer. However, some people were offended by Shae’s remark. She shared a screengrab of a hateful message she received via DMs in response to the negativity, and wrote in a follow-up social media message, “I’ve been getting a lot of such messages.” I simply wanted to state that I am not a Muslim. I am a Christian who comes from a Christian family and can pray for people of all faiths.”

“Mostly getting such messages now and it’s heartwarming,” she added, sharing a screengrab of a more empowering message she received. I wouldn’t have announced it that way if I hadn’t grown tired of people assuming they could police me by that standard.”

Shae shared a screengrab of yet another hateful message in response to her earlier comment about her religion in a third social media note. “And if you continue to send me messages like this, you will be blocked.” And, yes, I read messages when I have the opportunity,” she wrote. After being featured on the hit track Pasoori, which she performed alongside Ali Sethi as part of the Coke Studio series, Shae became an overnight sensation. On YouTube, the song’s video has been viewed nearly 150 million times.
