Indian LPG Tanker Jag Vasant Reaches Kandla After Unusual Strait of Hormuz Transit

The LPG tanker Jag Vasant successfully arrived at Gujarat’s Kandla Port on Friday, carrying about 42,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Mid‑sea transfer operations from the vessel are expected to begin soon to support India’s domestic energy needs. This marks another key delivery amid supply disruptions caused by regional tensions.

Earlier this week, Jag Vasant and another LPG tanker, Pine Gas, opted for an alternate route through the Qeshm–Larak channel to enter the Arabian Sea rather than the usual, shorter passage through the Strait of Hormuz. During the transit, both vessels updated their onboard identifiers to more specific names—such as “PINE GAS INDIAN SHIP” and “JGVASNTINDSHIPINDCRW”—indicating coordination with Iranian authorities and efforts to reduce risk while navigating the channel.

Jag Vasant becomes the third Indian LPG tanker to reach the country in recent days, following the arrivals of Shivalik at Mundra Port on March 16 and Nanda Devi at Vadinar Port on March 17, which together carried over 92,000 metric tons of LPG. Officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed the safe passage of Jag Vasant through the Strait of Hormuz and its expected arrival late on March 26.
