Hyderabad Archbishop Installed As Vatican Cardinal By Pope Francis
Poola Anthony, the archbishop of Hyderabad, was the first Telugu person to be consecrated as a cardinal in the Vatican. Pope Francis presided over the ceremony, which was held on Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
A press release from the Archdiocese of Hyderabad said on Saturday that the Archbishop of Hyderabad’s appointment as one of the College of Cardinals of the Roman Pontiff to advise him on various topics was a historic event for Hyderabad, both Telugu states and India as a whole.
“We can all sincerely be proud of this moment. In order to witness this celebration, a team from Hyderabad made up of bishops, priests, the archbishop’s relatives, and believers travelled to Rome “it read.
Anthony, a native of the Andhra Pradesh region’s Kurnool district, is 60 years old. Pope Francis elevated Anthony to the rank of Cardinal in May. In February 1992, he received his priestly ordination, and in February 2008, he was named Bishop of Kurnool.
In November 2020, he was chosen to serve as the Archbishop of Hyderabad. Filipe Neri Antonio Sebastao di Rosario Ferrao, the archbishop of Goa and Daman, is the other Indian cardinal.
