Himalayas Near Tipping Point, Millions of Lives at Risk: Report
The Himalayas are approaching a potential tipping point as glaciers continue to melt at an accelerating rate, threatening water security for millions across the region. A new study warns that the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region could reach “peak water” by mid-century, after which river flows may begin to decline.
The retreat of glaciers is also creating unstable glacial lakes, increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods in downstream communities. Nearly 200 high-risk glacial lakes have been identified in India, including 56 classified as very high risk.
The Himalayan region supports hundreds of millions of people and plays a major role in India’s economy, underpinning more than 20% of the country’s GDP. The report highlights the urgent need for better glacier monitoring, climate adaptation and disaster preparedness as the region faces growing environmental and economic risks.
