Google to Invest $15 Billion in AI Data Centre Hub in Andhra Pradesh
Google announced a landmark $15 billion investment to establish a massive artificial intelligence data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, over the next five years. The project, which will feature a 1-gigawatt data centre campus, marks one of the tech giant’s largest investments in India. “It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the U.S.,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian during an event in New Delhi.
The investment underscores Google’s commitment to expanding its global AI infrastructure amid growing competition from rivals like Microsoft and Amazon, both of which have also invested heavily in Indian data centres. As demand for AI-driven services skyrockets, companies are racing to build facilities capable of linking thousands of advanced chips for large-scale computing. Google has already committed nearly $85 billion this year toward strengthening its worldwide data centre network.
According to Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister Nara Lokesh, the project represents a major technological milestone for the state and the country. “In an era where data is the new oil, such initiatives will serve as a strategic advantage,” he said. The Visakhapatnam facility will be the largest in capacity and investment size in Asia, further solidifying India’s position as a key player in the global AI and data economy.
