Haryana on Alert After IPS Officer’s Death Sparks Protests
The Nayab Singh Saini-led Haryana government has directed the state police to remain on high alert following protests over the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, 52, on October 7. IPS Om Parkash Singh has been given additional charge as DGP during the leave of IPS Shatrujeet Kapur, who was reportedly named in the “final note” left by Kumar. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi left his residence on Monday to meet the late officer’s family.
In an official order, the government instructed police forces across districts to maintain strict vigilance and ensure communal harmony by actively engaging with community leaders. Officers have been asked to closely monitor the situation and take proactive measures to prevent any untoward incidents. The directive comes as a 31-member committee demanding justice for Kumar’s family issued a 48-hour ultimatum to take action against Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, warning of protests if no steps are taken.
Kumar was found dead at his home in Chandigarh on October 7. In a note recovered from his laptop, the senior IPS officer accused eight top police officials, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, of caste-based discrimination and harassment. The Chandigarh Police has requested the late officer’s laptop from his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) believes it may hold crucial evidence. The device is expected to be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for forensic analysis to verify the authenticity of the suicide note.
