Goldsmith Who Bought Jewellery Stolen From Sonam Kapoor’s House Arrested

According to a senior officer with the Delhi Police Crime Branch, a goldsmith who purchased the stolen jewellery belonging to actor Sonam Kapoor’s mother-in-law has been arrested. A nurse and her husband, who worked for Kapoor, stole the jewellery from her Amrita Shergill Road home.

Dev Verma, 40, a Kalkaji resident, was identified as the jeweller, according to police. They said they found stolen jewellery worth over a crore on Verma, including 100 diamonds, six gold chains, diamond bangles, a diamond bracelet, two tops, and a brass coin. According to them, an i10 car purchased with stolen funds by the accused couple has also been recovered. Other recovery efforts are still underway.

The couple used the stolen funds to pay off debts, cover medical expenses for their parents, and renovate their home. Verma is the third person to be detained in relation to the theft. Aparna Ruth Wilson, an employee at Kapoor’s residence, and her husband Naresh Kumar Sagar were arrested on Wednesday from their Sarita Vihar home. They are accused of stealing 2.4 crore in cash and jewellery from the actress’s home in February, where she lives with her husband and in-laws.

According to police, the nurse, who was hired to care for the actor’s 86-year-old mother-in-law, conspired with her accountant husband to steal the jewellery and cash from the house. According to them, Verma admitted to buying the stolen jewellery from Sagar and paying him in cash and via electronic transfer. Wilson and Sagar are accused of committing the theft on February 11 and a FIR was filed at Tughlaq Road Police Station on February 23.

The lack of knowledge about the time lag between the theft and when the owners noticed the theft was the most difficult challenge during the investigation, according to Rohit Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime). “The team zeroed in on two suspects based on technical analysis, and after a raid, both Naresh Kumar Sagar and his wife Aparna Ruth Wilson were apprehended from their home,” he said. Wilson told police that she was hired by the household when Kapoor’s mother-in-law was admitted to a hospital where she worked as a nurse in 2020, and she learned about the need for another nurse at their home, according to the officer.
