Ghazal maestro Umbayee passes away

UmbayeeVeteran ghazal singer Umbayee passed away at a private hospital in Aluva on Wednesday evening, at the age of 68. He family consists of his wife and three children. Umbayee was under treatment for lung cancer.

Conveying his condolences, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a statement stated, “Umbayee, who was a part of the field of music for over 4 decades, played a crucial role in making ghazals popular amongst the public. Umbayee’s departure is a big loss to the world of ghazals.”

He was born in Mattancherry, Kochi in 1952 to Abu and Fatima. Umbayee did several jobs before pick up ghazal has his profession. His journey to become a popular singer wasn’t easy. Pranamam was Umbayee’s first album, more than a dozen ghazal albums where released and his composed soundtrack for a movie called Novel with singer M Jayachandran was one of his hit credits.

Some of his famous songs include Akale mounam pol, Paduka Saigal padoo, Orikkal nee paranju. Umbayee set ghazal tunes to the lyrics of ONV Kurup, K Satchidanandan, Yusufali Kechery, etc.
