Famous five rupee doctor is no more
S. Jayachandran, who is widely known as the five rupee doctor in Tamil Nadu, has passed away due to some minor illness.
He never charged anything more than five rupee for his treatment. He was even not hesitant to offer treatment for free. For most in the North Chennai region, where his house-cum-clinic located, he was much more than a doctor. For them, he was a saviour sent by God.
The unexpected death has shocked many. Thousands of people have gathered around his house see their dearest doctor for the last time.
A Madras Medical Collage alumnus, Mr Jayachandran was active in most social organisations function in the area. For most studious youngsters in the area, he was the role model.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons. His wife is also a doctor. It is expected that his wife would take forward the divine task on which this doctor ventured into several decades ago.
No death has ever shocked North Chennai as much as the death of the five rupee doctor. The unpleasant state of deep silent is the dominant feeling prevailing in the mind of everyone in the area at present. The way nature responds indicates that the feeling has even crept into the environment.
