Families Honor Victims on First Anniversary of Air India Crash
Families of the 260 people killed in the Air India Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad gathered on the first anniversary of the tragedy to pay tribute to their loved ones through prayers, memorial events, and a candlelight vigil. The crash, which occurred on June 12, 2025, remains the deadliest air disaster in a decade, with relatives, officials, and dignitaries attending commemorations near the crash site and at B.J. Medical College.
The disaster site still bears visible scars, with damaged hostel buildings remaining closed a year later. The Gujarat government has announced plans to demolish the affected structure and construct a new building with support from the Tata Group, which owns a majority stake in Air India. For many families, the anniversary has reopened painful memories, as they continue to cope with loss and grief.
Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash. A preliminary report indicated that fuel supply to both engines was cut shortly after takeoff, while early assessments suggested cockpit actions may have played a role. However, India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has stressed that it is too early to draw final conclusions. The family of captain Sumeet Sabharwal has rejected suggestions of pilot error and is seeking an independent investigation into the tragedy.
