Europe Pushes Back on Trump Tariffs; India’s Response Muted

Europe reacted sharply to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of new tariffs over Greenland, while India’s response remained muted, according to geostrategist Brahma Chellaney. European leaders forcefully opposed the announced 10% tariff on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and the U.K., emphasizing that punitive measures should not dictate discussions on Greenland. In contrast, Chellaney noted, India has largely continued negotiations with Washington despite facing its own 50% tariffs, without issuing strong public pushback.

Trump’s tariffs are linked to his repeated attempts to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, citing its strategic significance and natural resources. The proposed tariffs, starting at 10% from February 1 and rising to 25% by June 1, are set to remain until a Greenland deal is reached. Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected the sale, while European nations warned that any U.S. military action could undermine NATO’s integrity.

In response, European countries have shown solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, deploying military personnel and holding public demonstrations supporting the island’s self-determination. Key EU officials, including Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, emphasized unified support, while leaders like British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned using tariffs against allies. Meanwhile, India maintains a low-profile stance, negotiating quietly with Washington despite ongoing trade pressures.
