Elephant Stuck For Several Hours In Middle Of Kerala River

In Kerala’s Thrissur district on Tuesday, a wild elephant was discovered stranded in the middle of the Chalakudy River for a number of hours after torrential rains in the area during the night elevated its water level by about 5 metres.
The elephant made several gallant attempts before finally succeeding in approaching the safety of the forest on the other side.

The tusker will now be able to move into the forest safely because the water currents close to the woodland were somewhat slower, according to forest officials monitoring the situation, who told the media.

The tusker was trapped on a small patch of land in the middle of the river for several hours while the river raged around the animal, thwarting rescue efforts by the fire department and forest officials who have assembled at the location near the Athirappilly waterfall.

The tusker then got swept several metres downstream during its attempts to cross the river, but it was able to grab on to a downed tree in the centre of the water.

It then gradually moved closer to the opposite bank of the river before vanishing from view, giving optimism that it would soon be in the safety of the forest.

As it attempted to cross the river, the tusker could be seen frequently sticking its trunk under the surface to check the depth.

According to locals, the elephant had entered a neighbouring area during the night in search of food before becoming stranded in the river on its way back.
