Dharmendra Deol, Bollywood’s Evergreen Action Hero, Dies at 89
Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra Deol, one of India’s most iconic screen heroes, passed away at his Mumbai residence on Monday at the age of 89, according to local media reports. The actor had been unwell for the past month. Though his family has not issued an official statement, prominent figures including Amitabh Bachchan were seen at the Juhu crematorium to pay their respects.
Dharmendra, fondly known simply as “Dharmendra,” enjoyed a prolific career spanning more than six decades, featuring in over 300 films across genres—from arthouse dramas and romantic tales to action-packed blockbusters and slapstick comedies. Born in Punjab in 1935, he entered the film industry after winning a talent contest in 1960 and swiftly rose to become one of the most celebrated stars of his generation. His role in the 1975 cult classic Sholay, which remains deeply embedded in Indian pop culture, cemented his status as a cinematic legend.
Beyond films, Dharmendra briefly ventured into politics, serving as a member of parliament from 2004 to 2009. He is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children. Tributes poured in from across the nation, including messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. “He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played,” Modi said in a post on X.
