Delhi Car Blast Declared Terror Attack as Probe Widens to Kashmir Arrests
India’s government on Wednesday confirmed that the deadly car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort, which killed eight people and injured at least 20, is being treated as a “terror incident.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet condemned the blast as a heinous attack by anti-national forces and instructed investigators to act with “utmost urgency” to identify and apprehend those responsible. The incident marks the first major explosion in the capital since 2011.
The attack occurred just hours after authorities in Jammu and Kashmir arrested seven men — including two doctors — during a separate anti-terror operation that uncovered pistols, assault rifles, and nearly 3,000 kg of bomb-making material. Police described the arrests as part of a “white-collar terror ecosystem” involving radicalised professionals linked to Pakistan-based groups Jaish-e-Mohammad and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. Investigators are now probing whether the Delhi blast is connected to the earlier arrests.
Following the explosion, Kashmir police conducted hundreds of raids across the region, detaining around 500 people for questioning. Investigators are examining a possible link between the car’s driver and one of the arrested doctors, though no suspects have yet been named in the Delhi case. The National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe as authorities pursue all leads in the high-profile terror investigation.
