DAC Clears ₹79,000-Crore Defence Purchases to Boost Armed Forces’ Capabilities

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Monday approved procurement proposals worth about ₹79,000 crore for the armed forces, strengthening India’s defence preparedness across the Army, Navy and Air Force. Announcing the decision, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) granted during the meeting would significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the services, adding that the government is working tirelessly to modernise national defence infrastructure and technology.

For the Indian Army, the approvals include new-age warfare and surveillance systems such as loitering munitions for artillery units, lightweight radars capable of tracking low-flying targets, long-range rockets for the Pinaka system, and the upgraded Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System Mark-II to counter hostile drones. The Navy has received approval for bollard pull tugboats to support harbour operations, high-frequency radios for secure long-distance communication, and the leasing of high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial platforms to strengthen 24×7 surveillance in the Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Air Force will acquire Astra Mark-II beyond-visual-range missiles, SPICE-1000 precision-guidance kits, a full-mission simulator for Tejas fighter pilots, and an automatic system to record aircraft take-offs and landings in all weather conditions, improving training, safety and combat readiness. The approvals come at a time when defence remains the largest segment of government expenditure, with allocations rising from ₹6.09 lakh crore in 2023-24 to a budgeted ₹6.81 lakh crore in 2025-26.
