India Evacuates Thousands Ahead of Second Cyclone in a Week
Authorities in India’s eastern coastal regions began evacuating thousands of people on Monday as Cyclone Murasu is expected to make landfall early Tuesday. The severe cyclonic storm has developed over the Bay of Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting its impact along parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Officials are preparing for widespread disruption as the region continues to recover from last week’s deadly Cyclone Arnab.
Around 2,000 people have already been evacuated, while authorities are planning to relocate approximately 30,000 people to safer locations. Last week’s Cyclone Arnab claimed six lives and caused significant damage to houses and crops. Although Murasu is expected to be less intense than the previous cyclone, authorities remain on high alert and are continuing evacuation operations.
The Bay of Bengal is known for generating powerful tropical cyclones that frequently affect India’s eastern coastline. Disaster management teams are monitoring the storm and coordinating precautionary measures to minimise casualties and property damage. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas have been urged to follow official safety instructions and move to designated shelters.
