Congress Targets PM Modi Over Trump Meeting, Alleges Failure to Raise Seafarers’ Deaths
The Congress on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conduct during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that Modi appeared overly deferential and failed to firmly raise key national concerns, particularly the deaths of three Indian seafarers in a US military strike.
Khera claimed that while Trump publicly praised Modi, the Prime Minister did not specifically seek accountability or express concern over the seafarers’ deaths during their media interaction. The Congress leader also accused the government of prioritising image-building over national interests and compared Modi’s approach with that of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, whom he said took stronger positions while dealing with the United States.
The opposition party further criticised the government over issues such as US-Pakistan engagement, trade concerns, visa restrictions affecting Indians, and changes in American strategic policies. While the government has maintained that Modi raised the broader issue of maritime security and the safety of Indian seafarers during the talks, Congress argued that the matter deserved a more direct and forceful response from India’s leadership.
