Cabinet Clears ₹20,804 Crore Railway Multitracking Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved eight railway multitracking projects with a combined estimated cost of ₹20,804 crore. The projects will add around 1,196 km to the Indian Railways network, cover 31 districts across nine states and are targeted for completion by 2029-30.

Five projects worth ₹10,021 crore will be implemented across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. These include new lines and doubling works on key routes such as Arakkonam-Renigunta, Whitefield-Bangarapet, Hosur-Omalur and Salem-Karur-Dindigul, along with multitracking between Secunderabad and Kazipet. The projects are expected to improve connectivity to major destinations and benefit thousands of villages.

The remaining three projects, costing ₹10,783 crore, will cover West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Together, the eight projects are expected to create an additional 74 million tonnes per annum of freight capacity, improve efficiency on congested corridors and strengthen logistics under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The government also expects the projects to reduce oil consumption and carbon emissions significantly.
