Australia Tightens Student Visa Rules for South Asia Ahead of 2026 Intake

Australia has tightened scrutiny of student visa applications from several South Asian countries ahead of the 2026 academic intake, placing India in a higher-risk category under its assessment framework. The changes, which took effect on January 8, 2026, were issued through the PRISMS system by the Department of Education and are expected to slow visa processing and raise documentary requirements for prospective students. Authorities say the move is aimed at addressing emerging integrity concerns while continuing to support genuine international students.

Under Australia’s Assessment Level (AL) system, countries are ranked from AL1 (lowest risk) to AL3 (highest risk), with higher levels triggering stricter checks. According to sector analysis, India, Nepal and Bhutan have been moved from AL2 to AL3, while Bangladesh has jumped from AL1 to AL3. Sri Lanka has been raised to AL2, and Pakistan remains at AL3. The rapid update, coming just months after the previous revision in September 2025, has raised concerns among education providers and recruitment agents.

Officials say the tougher stance follows evidence of increased fraudulent financial and academic documents detected during recent visits to South Asia. However, education sector leaders warn that frequent policy shifts risk creating uncertainty for institutions and students alike at a crucial recruitment period. While genuine applicants will still have pathways to study in Australia, stakeholders are awaiting clearer guidance on implementation and whether the changes represent a temporary clampdown or a longer-term reset of Australia’s student visa risk framework.
