Asus Freezes Smartphone Launches in 2026, Sparks Exit Concerns from Android Market
Asus will not launch any new smartphones in 2026, a move that has intensified speculation about the Taiwanese company’s possible exit from the Android mobile market. Chairman Jonney Shih said the company “will no longer add new mobile phone models in the future,” according to Taiwanese media outlet Inside, though he left open the possibility of a return at an unspecified time.
The decision marks a sharp turn for Asus, a brand known for its niche yet respected Zenfone flagships and ROG gaming phones. The company has not introduced a premium handset in nearly a year, and availability of recent models such as the ROG Phone 8 has declined across several global markets. Asus, however, assured existing customers that software updates, warranty coverage and technical support will continue.
The halt appears to be part of a broader strategic shift toward emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and smart glasses, with smartphone R&D teams likely to be redeployed. Rising component costs, particularly memory prices, and intense competition in the global smartphone market have further strained margins. In India, where Asus catered mainly to gaming enthusiasts, its pullback removes one of the few brands focused on experimental and gaming-first smartphone designs.
