Apple Pay Launches in India With Axis Bank Partnership

Apple Pay has officially launched in India through a partnership with Axis Bank, marking the payment service’s entry into one of the world’s largest digital payments markets. Axis Bank will initially offer Apple Pay to customers with eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards, while cards on India’s RuPay network will not be supported.

Customers can add eligible Axis Bank cards through the bank’s mobile app or Apple Wallet and use Apple Pay for payments in stores, apps and online. Transactions can be authenticated using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, allowing users to make contactless payments without entering a card PIN or one-time password.

Axis Bank had 16.3 million credit cards outstanding in August, compared with 124 million nationwide, according to central bank data. Apple has also held discussions with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank about expanding the service, but no commercial agreements have been reached so far. India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts for 84% of digital payment volumes, according to a 2025 IMF report.
