Apple in Early Talks to Package iPhone Chips in India
Apple Inc is in early-stage discussions with Indian chipmakers to assemble and package components for the iPhone in India, marking the first time the company has explored local chip assembly and packaging in the country, as per the reports. The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said it remains unclear which chips would be involved, though display-related chips are seen as the most likely candidates.
As part of the discussions, Apple has reportedly held talks with CG Semi, an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) firm owned by the Murugappa Group, which is setting up a facility in Sanand, Gujarat. While Reuters could not independently verify the report, CG Semi told that it does not comment on market speculation or discussions with specific customers and would make disclosures when there is concrete information to share. Apple has not responded to requests for comment.
The move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to deepen its manufacturing footprint in India as it seeks to reduce dependence on China amid geopolitical tensions and tariff uncertainties. Apple aims to manufacture most iPhones sold in the United States in India by the end of 2026, a timeline it has reportedly accelerated after the U.S. imposed steep duties on Chinese imports, while levies on Indian goods remain significantly lower.
