Apple Explores iPhone Chip Assembly in India
Apple is reportedly in early discussions with Indian chipmakers to assemble and package components for the iPhone, according to the Economic Times. This marks the first time Apple has considered performing chip assembly in India, with the initial focus likely on display chips. The discussions are taking place at CG Semi’s upcoming outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat.
CG Semi, owned by the Murugappa Group, is building the Sanand facility, though it has not confirmed details of talks with Apple. Both Apple and CG Semi have refrained from commenting publicly, with CG Semi noting it will share information when concrete developments occur. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
Apple aims to produce most of the iPhones sold in the U.S. at its Indian facilities by the end of 2026, accelerating its plans to reduce reliance on China and navigate potential tariffs. Earlier this year, the U.S. imposed 26% duties on imports from India, significantly lower than tariffs on Chinese goods, though most duties on India have been paused for three months.
