Former President, top scientist, Bharat Ratna, People’s president, these are just a few words to describe APJ Abdul Kalam. He had collapsed during a session in Shillong on 27 July, 2015 where he was in the middle of what he loved to do the most, talking with the students. Here it was the students of the Indian Institute of Management.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen was the 11th president of India during 2002 to 2007. He was a scientist turned politician who was born and bought up in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He was born on 15th October 1931 to humble parents where his father was a boat owner. He has spent most of his times as a scientist and science administrator mainly at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and was involved in India’s civilian space program and military missile development efforts. Hence, he came to be known as the Missile Man of India.
Abdul Kalam was then elected as President of Indian during 2002 and had served for five years. After stepping down from the presidential post he again returned to his civilian life of education, writing and public service. He had written many inspirational books like Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, India 2020, Target 3 Billion etc. he was the one who brought Rashtrapati Bhavan to the people. Even till his last he was engaged in his favorite activity-being with children whom he endures the most. He always put India first in everything. Whether he was a scientist or president he was a patriot first. He was inspired by three of India’s greatest scientists- Dr Vikram Sarachai, professor Satish Dhawan and Dr Brahm Prakash.
