Another 30 cities added to smart city project

M Venkaiah Naidu, the Minister for Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation on Friday announced that extra 30 cities would be added to the the existing list of cities to be developed as smart cities. The Smart City Mission launched in June 2015, was aimed at over all development of Urban India. Till now around 90 cities have been listed including the 30 cities minister announced on Friday. The total slot available for the smart city was 40 out of which only 30 were selected even though there were 45 entries. The cut short of the allotted city was to make the project more efficient and feasible

Among the new batch of 30 cities, Thiruvananthapuram – Kerala’s capital topped the list in the round of selection followed by Naya Raipur – Chattisgarh’s capital. M V Naidu said “ Of the 30 cities announced today, 26 of them have proposed affordable housing projects that Benefit the urban poor, 26 cities will be taking up school & hospital projects, 29 will be taking up redesign and redevelopment of roads.”

The total announcement of the smart city project is Rs. 1,91,115 Crore of which Rs. 57,393 Crore has been allowed for the selected 30 cities.The minster also announced that the remaining 10 slots would be competed between 20 cities .
