Amazon Expands Counterfeit Crime Unit to India to Combat Fake Goods

Amazon has announced the expansion of its Counterfeit Crime Unit (CCU) to India, strengthening its global efforts to protect consumers and brands from counterfeit products. The move brings together Amazon’s local experts to work closely with Indian brands, sellers, and law enforcement agencies, aiming to curb counterfeit operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing e-commerce markets. The initiative is designed to enhance consumer trust while safeguarding the integrity of online marketplaces.

Kebharu Smith, Director of Amazon’s CCU, emphasized that the company’s global anti-counterfeiting measures have already prevented millions of dollars in potential harm. With the unit now operating in India, Amazon plans to deploy advanced technology, dedicated teams, and strategic partnerships to identify and take action against counterfeit networks. The expansion will focus on proactively detecting fake listings, protecting intellectual property, and enabling coordinated enforcement actions against violators.

The launch of CCU in India aligns with Amazon’s broader commitment to the country, including its plan to invest over $35 billion by 2030. The initiative builds on existing brand protection measures such as machine learning-driven detection systems, investigative teams, and the Brand Registry program. It also complements campaigns like #ScamSmartIndia, launched in collaboration with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, to combat online fraud. Since its inception in 2020, the CCU has initiated over 200 civil actions globally, securing more than $180 million in court-ordered restitution and judgments.
