Google India Lays Off 453 People From Various Operations

The tech giant Google fired about 450 workers from several divisions in India. According to reports, the workers received written notice of their dismissal late on Thursday night.

Sanjay Gupta, the country head and vice president of Google India, sent the email. Hindu Businessline stated that Google India has not yet responded to an email it sent with questions on the move, citing its sources in the article.

It’s unclear if the 453 layoffs include the 12,000 job cuts Alphabet Inc., parent company of Google, announced last month.

At the time, Alphabet Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai claimed the employment cuts were conducted in an effort to take prompt action as the company’s growth stalled.

“If you don’t act clearly and decisively and early, we can compound the problem and make it much worse. These are decisions I needed to make,” Mr Pichai said, according to Bloomberg.

Neal Mohan, an Indian-American, has also been named as the new CEO of YouTube, which is owned by Alphabet, following the announcement that the current CEO will be stepping down to focus on “family, health, and personal initiatives.”

After years of rapid development and recruiting, Google is the latest of the Silicon Valley behemoths to attempt to reduce payrolls.

Microsoft slashed 10,000 jobs earlier in January, or about 5% of its workforce. Amazon is also laying off 18,000 employees. In its first significant layoff, Meta fired roughly 11,000 employees last year, or 13% of its staff.
