Air India Reconsiders Expansion as Tata Group Pushes Cost-Cutting Measures

Air India is reportedly scaling back its ambitious growth plans as the Tata Group urges the airline to focus on reducing mounting losses and stabilizing operations. According to sources familiar with the matter, the carrier is in discussions with aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing to defer deliveries from its massive order book of around 500 aircraft. The move is aimed at easing financial pressure by postponing significant payment obligations associated with new aircraft deliveries.

The airline is also reviewing its network expansion strategy, reconsidering plans to launch services to new domestic and international destinations. Several route additions may be delayed or cancelled, including operations planned at the upcoming Noida International Airport near New Delhi. These measures mark a notable shift from Air India’s aggressive fleet and route expansion strategy unveiled after the Tata Group acquired the airline in 2022.

Air India’s financial challenges have intensified following a series of disruptions, including the fatal crash of Flight AI171 last year, regional airspace restrictions, geopolitical tensions affecting flight routes, and a weakening Indian rupee. The airline has reportedly accumulated losses exceeding ₹550 billion since 2022. While Air India has dismissed reports of a major strategic retreat as speculative, the carrier maintains that it remains committed to its long-term modernization and transformation plans.
