IndiGo in Talks to Buy 100 Embraer Jets in Major Fleet Expansion
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is in discussions with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer to purchase 100 regional jets, with an option to acquire around 50 additional aircraft, according to sources familiar with the matter. The talks are still at an early stage, and no final agreement has been reached. The aircraft models and order numbers have not yet been confirmed, while deliveries could begin as early as 2030.
The proposed deal could be worth approximately $5.1 billion, according to estimates by JPMorgan analysts. It would mark a significant breakthrough for Embraer in India’s rapidly expanding aviation market, where airlines are increasing their fleets to meet growing passenger demand. The purchase could also help IndiGo expand regional connectivity, serve smaller destinations and replace some of its existing ATR turboprop aircraft with larger jets offering more seats.
IndiGo, which operated 442 aircraft as of September, aims to expand its fleet to around 600 by 2030. The airline is also planning to strengthen its long-haul operations while maintaining its low-cost short-haul business model. A potential partnership with Embraer could diversify its largely Airbus-based fleet and strengthen its position in India’s growing regional aviation sector.
