Zydus Lifesciences Reports 26.6% Profit Decline as Rising Costs Hit Earnings
Indian pharmaceutical company Zydus Lifesciences reported a 26.6% decline in consolidated net profit for the July–September quarter, as rising operational expenses outweighed strong revenue growth. Net profit dropped to ₹926 crore from ₹1,261 crore in the same period last year. Following the announcement, the company’s shares fell around 4%.
Despite the decline in profits, Zydus recorded a 29.2% increase in total revenue to ₹7,910 crore. However, overall expenses surged 51%, driven by a 36.4% rise in research and development costs and a 33.7% increase in employee benefit expenses. Revenue from North America, its largest market, grew 20.8% to ₹3,315 crore, supported by higher sales volumes and new generic drug launches. Its Indian business also recorded 18% growth, driven by demand for chronic disease treatments.
Analysts highlighted market share gains in chronic and acute therapies, along with differentiated product launches, as key drivers of domestic growth. Meanwhile, competitors Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories reported better-than-expected quarterly profits, while Cipla missed profit estimates due to weaker North American sales. Zydus now faces the challenge of managing rising expenses while sustaining its strong revenue growth across key markets.
