Jio Explores Technology Partnerships with Comcast and Charter for Global Broadband Expansion
Reliance-owned Jio Platforms, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is in discussions with US telecom giants Comcast and Charter Communications to license its wireless broadband technology in exchange for potential equity stakes, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move is part of Jio’s international expansion strategy, which aims to secure 10 to 15 global partners for its broadband technology. Jio recently made headlines with its record-breaking $3.2 billion IPO in India.
Jio’s technology, known as Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR), delivers high-speed internet to homes using unlicensed Wi-Fi frequencies without requiring traditional cable connections. The system uses transmitters installed on towers or rooftops to provide broadband connectivity, potentially reducing infrastructure and spectrum costs. Jio believes this technology could help companies such as Comcast and Charter compete with growing fixed wireless and fibre broadband services in the US market.
Jio had also held discussions with South Africa’s MTN Group, but the negotiations reportedly stalled over valuation and licensing issues. With more than 500 million telecom subscribers in India and over 6.5 million UBR-powered users, Jio is looking to expand as a technology provider rather than build its own networks overseas. However, no partnership agreements have been finalised, and discussions with potential global partners are still ongoing.
