India Targets Best-Ever Cycling World Championships in 2032
India is aiming to deliver the “best-ever” UCI Road World Championships when Pune hosts the event in 2032, as the country strengthens its ambitions to become a major destination for international sporting events. The announcement follows the success of the Pune Grand Tour in January, India’s first multi-stage road cycling race, and marks a significant step forward for the country’s cycling development.
The Cycling Federation of India said preparations would focus on improving road infrastructure, managing traffic and raising public awareness about the event. Although India has limited experience hosting major international cycling competitions, federation officials expressed confidence that the country could meet global standards and change perceptions about its ability to organise large-scale sporting events.
The championships could also strengthen India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad at the centre of its proposal. India is among several countries being considered for the Olympics, and officials believe the six-year preparation period leading up to the cycling championships will help demonstrate the country’s readiness to host major global sporting events.
