Peru Awaits India Response as Trade Deal Talks Near Final Stage
Peru is awaiting India’s response to a counterproposal as negotiations for a free trade agreement enter their final stage, Trade Minister Rogers Valencia said. Lima hopes the agreement can be finalised and signed in 2027, after negotiations between the two countries began in 2017.
India has emerged as the second-largest destination for Peruvian exports this year, overtaking the United States, largely due to increased gold shipments. Peru exported goods worth $6.184 billion to India between January and July, marking a 152% rise from the same period last year, while exports to the US reached $5.971 billion.
Peru, one of the world’s major copper producers, expects its total exports to exceed $100 billion this year. Meanwhile, the country is also negotiating with the US over higher tariffs introduced in July, which have affected agricultural exports including blueberries, grapes and avocados, as well as textiles.
